Edsall, Nicholas The fact that both Pride marches will be traveling in opposite directions through New York City on Sunday while marking the same occasion — the 50th anniversary of the uprising at the Stonewall Inn in that sparked the modern gay rights movement — is as much a metaphor for a clash of ideas as it is a logistical fact.
And like the holders of a secret, they had an advantage which was a disadvantage, too, and which was true of no other minority group in the United States.

Many Pride celebrations, WorldPride included, can trace their origins back to the clash that broke out between the police and the crowd outside the Stonewall Inn and the days of protest that followed. Howard Smith, in the bar with the police, took a wrench from the bar and stuffed it in his pants, unsure if he might have to use it against the mob or the police.
